Call to Artists

An all day performance event is being planned for May 31st in Santa Cruz starting early noon and continuing until sun down. This event will happen at San Lorenzo Park, an outside public space adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The intention of this event is to explore interventionist performance art and create space for collaboration and improvisation. By interventionism we bring performances outside the theatre space and place them in a public setting for the creation of community. Collaboration and improvisation will support the role of the performer, dropping the role of audience member.
The blueprint of the event encourages spontaneous performance areas and will include:
•	An open forum for artists whose performances call for a more spontaneous, site specific environment
•	A main stage
•	Band creation area – with musical instruments and encouraged experimental band performances
•	Workshop area
•	Task oriented improvisational scores to participate in and perform for one another
•	Trade area for artisans (non-monetary)
•	Artists who have still-art are welcomed to install their work within the space
Those who contact ahead of time will have the choice to be scheduled into the main stage area and are also encouraged to take their performances outside the main stage for a shift of interaction. Even though this opportunity is offered, our hope is that it will not subtract from the spontaneity of the event or create separation between audience and performer.
We encourage those who perform to teach a workshop during the day to share ideas and art disciplines. The content of the workshop can be connected to your specific performance but is not required to be. There will be a workshop board to write down the time and content of the workshop. Do not be discouraged to perform if you would prefer not to teach a workshop, the workshop is not required but appreciated.
This event is free. Please do not expect to pay for performances, workshops, and entry; or to be paid. This space is for all to share performance and empower one another through teaching and critiquing.
Due to the size of the space and structure of the event we are asking for there to be no amplified music. Sorry if this comes as an inconvenience for some.
If your performance contains fire or open flame please contact us for further notice.

This is a collaborative effort and we want to hear your ideas as well. As much as this email might make the organization sound centralized this is a non-centralized event and we invite all too participate in the functions of making this situation manifest. This event is for all of us and more, so please send your questions, comments, ideas, critiques, and concerns to spacieface@gmail.com. Let’s get ideas spiraling.

The people want an end to the Iraq war, and Bush expands it
Denounce the U.S. bombing of Somalia!

The ANSWER Coalition is organizing or supporting emergency demonstrations on Thursday, Jan. 11, in cities and towns around the United States. The demonstrations are taking place one day after George Bush makes a nationally televised speech announcing plans to expand the war and occupation of Iraq.

Be sure to print out flyers for the March 17th March on the Pentagon, and distribute them at Thursday's emergency demonstration.

Yesterday, the Bush administration and the Pentagon carried out aerial bombings in Somalia. This is a brazen act of aggression against a sovereign country. Bush and the generals arrogate to themselves the right to carry out unilateral armed attacks anywhere on the globe. The war in Iraq is one front in a global war to assert and maintain U.S. military domination. Congress is remaining silent again in the face of a new act of aggression.

The people of the United States, by an overwhelming majority, want the war in Iraq to come to an end. The people of Iraq want the United States occupation forces to leave their country. As happened in Vietnam, there is a widespread recognition within the summits of the political and military establishment that a military victory in Iraq is impossible. Yet the politicians want to continue the war so as to avoid the perception of defeat for the United States in the strategic, oil-rich region of the Middle East.

Emergency demonstrations on Thursday will demand: U.S. Out of Iraq Now! A troop increase, or what is labeled a "surge" will only cause more death and destruction. Already 655,000 and over 3,000 U.S. soldiers have died as a result of the war. The number of dead and injured is mounting each day.

Come out this Thursday to protest this outrageous escalation of a deadly war based on lies. Bring signs, banners and your March 17th flyers to express your opposition to the Iraq war. The people are the only force that can stop the war and bring the troops home now!
Santa Cruz, CA, December 31st, 2006: Undaunted by civil rights violations last year by the Santa Cruz Police Department, this year's Last Night DIY Parade and Celebration returns in full force to take over the streets.

In your near future: a New Year’s eve parade crammed with jugglers, clowns, samba drums, pirates, bikes, and marching bands. The usual Santa Cruz city-sponsored New Year’s eve event? Hardly. This is Last Night Santa Cruz, a people’s parade, a do-it-yourself celebration that goes beyond the now-defunct First Night event, canceled two years ago due to money problems.

Last year, the celebration erupted into the national headlines when it was discovered that Santa Cruz Police had violated the civil liberties of organizers by spying on their meetings for three months and gathering information about the group and other unrelated activities.

This year, the celebration returns with an unabashedly defiant point-of-view. A manifesto published on the Last Night DIY website states, "Last Night is a decentralized, collective, spontaneous, open, public New Year's Eve celebration, a completely organic event, organized and put on at a grassroots-level." DIY stands for do-it-yourself and the parade boasts no city-sponsorship and no corporate donors.

The Last Night website states, "The parade is not merely a celebration, but a celebration of the power that we all have when we gather together to make something happen. Not just a street party, but a party to reclaim our streets."

This year on New Year's Eve, the celebration will meet at sunset near the Saturn Cafe parking lot on Pacific Ave.

A Brief History of Last Night

Last Night started in 2005 as a response to the implosion of the city-sponsored First Night celebration. Elsewhere that year, the government abandoned millions of poor people in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, and so Last Night was also a commemoration of the do-it-yourself spirit of those surviving communities.

That year, thousands of people came out to participate in the people’s parade that marched raucously up Pacific Avenue. The parade included the Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra, martial arts displays, firedancers, the Santa Cruz Peace Coalition, Indonesian music, drum circles, floats, and the Opera Lady. The parade was high-energy and peaceful. There were no conflicts with police who’s light presence remained far on the periphery. The parade and it’s organizers represented a broad cross-section of the community.

In a typical overreaction of authority to the threat of people taking responsibility in their own lives, the Santa Cruz Police Department deployed undercover officers to infiltrate parade planning meetings for three months. Records released after the spying scandal came to light, revealed a pattern of abuses, including monitoring unrelated groups and other first amendment activities and compiling police dossiers of organizers. The city's own police auditor determined that police had violated the civil rights of parade organizers. After six months of effort, community, activist, and ACLU involvement, the city put in place a weak policy to curb some of the abuses of police power.

A Decentralized Community Event

Organizers, or "un-organizers" as they prefer to be called, issued a manifesto to make clear the intentions of the Last Night parade, online at the Last Night DIY website at www.lastnightdiy.org. The site also offers history, news, discussion, and press info about the Last Night DIY Celebration.

It is a people's parade and everyone is invited: parents with kids, wayward youth, the homeless, Mexican workers, students, retired people. Get your friends together and bring your creativity to the parade. Build a float or puppets. Bring your friends dressed as clowns. Make music and performance art. Show off your art car. Form a bike gang. Bring your political message because unlike First Night, free speech is encouraged.

The celebration is decentralized -- no one person or group is making it happen. No one is in charge, but those involved in the parade claim they are all leaders. Decisions about tactical matters are made collectively by those willing to step up and make it happen. The paraders are not asking for permits and permission, nor are there any limits on participation. No one is in a position to restrict who can participate or in what way. People simply show up prepared to take part in a city-wide celebration.

Not Seeking Permits

Beyond the impossible barrier of the city's arduous and prohibitively expensive special event permit, the permit process itself is a racket. It is the process through which the city seeks to charge us for the privilege of exercising our rights to free speech and free assembly. Accepting a permit puts someone in the position of having to take responsibility and liability for the actions of others. Parade organizers reject that way of thinking.

The focus is on self-reliance. One of the most important aspects of the Last Night celebration is that people take responsibility for themselves and for their community. As such, parade "un-organizers" take pains to address issues such as security, traffic control, sanitation, clean-up, and police liaison.

The Last Night DIY Parade is not seeking permits from the city. Last Night organizers reason, "When we ask permission to live our lives, to celebrate, to come together, to express dissent, we legitimate the power of institutions over us. We give up our power to make our own choices. We refuse to ask permission to be free."

The Last Night manifesto states, "We want to live in a world full of play and celebration, where self-expression is a matter of course. A world full of surprises, in which relationships are authentic and open-ended. A world in which we share a direct connection to the world around us. Where one does not have to ask permission of authorities to realize one’s dreams of adventure and possibility."
Circus Amok is a New York City based circus-theater company whose mission is to provide free public art addressing contemporary issues of social justice to the people of New York City. The group has been together since 1989 bringing its funny, queer, caustic and sexy, political one-ring spectacles to diverse neighborhoods from East New York to the East Village. The company is comprised of eight ring-performers, a 7 member live band, 3-roustabouts, and a trucker/technician extraordinaire. The performers in the ring are trained in traditional circus skills - tight rope walking, juggling, acrobatics, stilt walking, clowning - as well as experimental dance, theater, and gender-bending performance art and improvisational techniques. Over the years the traditional circus techniques have been combined with dance, lifesize puppetry, music old and new, and dramatic monologues creating new meanings for circus while continuing to entertain the crowds of all ages throughout the city streets, gardens, parks, and playgrounds.

i'm a theatre artist/designer based in toronto, with a grand idea about getting a group of people together on a regular basis to do what i call a parade of fools. i would like this to have elements of commedia in it, as well as circus, modern dance, and hardcore "performance art".

so there would be performers/dancers dressed up in otherworldy & stylized costumes, clowns, and stylized characters (not necessarily from the commedia stock, but with that kind of comedic grotesque absurdity). there would be stiltwalkers, musicians (like a marching band, they would wear their instruments). i picture this troupe roaming and doing contact improv & purely improvised dance. then they would be able to stop and have little "scenes" where two or more performers would play; i am interested here in engaging in oral and physical, BUT nonverbal play. so no text & no language, but sound and movement. i see this as being a way for each performer to express something truthful from inside, something that can't come out in the restricted form of textual dialogue.

this idea came from seeing the white procession at burning man in 04, at dawn by the temple, where two of them were playing... one with a parrot puppet and the other with an umbrella, both of them creating music via beatboxing & vocally/physically improv'ing together.

does anyone get what i'm talking about? can anyone suggest how to use commedia dell'arte characters, style, or history to make this idea happen? does anyone already have this idea or have a group actually doing it?

There's no First Night this year, so we're going to do it ourselves. It's our parade. It's your parade. No city-sponsorship. No corporate donors. We make it happen together. We're calling it
